From my filmmaking courses I have come to discover that the art/communications department at State is an untapped well of artistic genius and new ideas. I would love to focus on several students (or faculty) that people in Charleston should know about. The idea for this article comes at the perfect moment, when many students are preparing for graduation and stepping out into the "real world." Artists, more than just about anyone, have a hard road ahead of them because galleries don't tend to frequent job fairs and the like.
I will contact Dave Brock and/or Danny Boyd in the Communications department, as well as Dr. Ovrebo or Molly Erlandson in the Art department to get some names of student artists to profile. I will focus on their art, how they find inspiration, what their experience has been like at State and in the "art world," and what they hope to accomplish with their art. It might also be interesting to find out what they expect following graduation and if they already have "back-up plans" in place like so many artists do.
This may turn into 2 profile pieces if I obtain a good interview subject from each field.

I would love to see a piece profiling either Danny or Reidun and their work--or perhaps one article for each. They're both interesting enough people with diverse portfolios that will allow for two full profile pieces.
ReplyDeleteI would love to do pieces on both, but I'm attempting more of a student angle on this one. (Wish we had more time with this zine...) Of course, I could always get some secondary info from these professors on the students I'm profiling...might help fill out the article a bit.
